Using a strengths-based and client-let coaching approach, the Career Coach helps support refugees, asylees, Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) holders and victims of trafficking move towards independence and stabilization through achieving their employment and educational goals. The Career Coach conducts continuous assessment and coaching of adult refugee job seekers, connecting them with English as a Second Language (ESL) and vocational training programs for employment placement services. The Career Coach provides support and customized coaching to refugee clients starting at arrival/enrollment, during job preparation and placement, and through post-employment.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Works closely with other members of the LFS multi-disciplinary team to ensure that necessary supports, such as childcare assistance, are in place so that refugees can secure employment.
- Using motivational interviewing techniques, develops comprehensive career plans in collaboration with clients, empowering them to set and achieve short- and long-term career goals.
- Based on client interest, education, experience, and career goals, refers clients to appropriate training or educational programs. Ensures that clients are connected with those referrals and have the supports to attend and successfully complete educational and training programs.
- Determines ongoing eligibility and program compliance for cash assistance and transportation assistance. Distributes these payments to eligible clients on a monthly basis and tracks and enters all payments into agency database.
- Connects refugee job seekers to the evolving job market by providing labor market information, resume development, interview preparation and practice, and coaching on job search techniques.
- Maintains client records, including ESL attendance, vocational training program evaluations, case notes and other documents that demonstrate clients' progress towards career goals.
- Works in collaboration with teammates to connect clients with job opportunities according to clients' career goals, skills, experience, and education.
- Documents all client interactions, including referrals, coaching sessions, follow up, and supportive services provided, in case notes.
- Provides intensive post-employment support for employed clients as necessary to promote job retention and achievement of long-term career goals.
- Attends required meetings, such as staff meetings and monthly refugee network Employment Stakeholders meetings.
- Participates in community outreach activities that advance the work and message of the Refugee & Asylee Programs.
- Performs other duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Previous experience in vocational counseling and/or training preferred.
- Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
- Ability to relate professionally and to collaborate with diverse individuals in a multicultural environment.
- Abides by high quality of standards of service delivery expectations of LFSRM, State Office, Department of Health and Human Services - Office of Refugee Resettlement, and Department of State.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Negotiation and conflict resolution skills .
- Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, and Outlook) as well as relational databases.
- Must have and maintain a valid driver's license and provide proof of auto liability insurance at the level of 100,000/300,000/100,000
- Demonstrates commitment to the mission, values and vision of Lutheran Family Services Rocky Mountains.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Volunteers and interns as appropriate.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Undergraduate degree from four-year college or university, 2+ years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
